Internship Insight: What Did I Do At Unilever?
Margaret Hanlon, Enactus MU and DCU Alumni and winner of the 2017 Unilever internship recaps on her experience and how it landed her a full time position in Unilever!
‘In June of last year, I was lucky enough to be chosen as the Unilever intern of 2017 and got to work for, in my opinion, one the best companies in the FMCG industry – Unilever.
As an Enactus student in both Maynooth University and DCU, the core values of Enactus became ingrained in my mind and therefore I naturally became extremely socially conscious throughout my three years on the program. Working at Unilever has shown me that large multinational companies can too have values that align perfectly to those of Enactus – empowering and improving the livelihoods of many, in an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable way.
In my role as an eCommerce, New Revenue Streams and Unilever Foundry intern, I learned the ins and outs of working in the FMCG industry, liaising with external companies and agencies and building relationships with other Unilever employees both in Ireland and across the globe. I got the chance to work cross-category on fantastic brands such as Ben & Jerry’s, Lynx, HB, Dove and many more. I had the opportunity to work with up and coming start-ups, which gave me invaluable insight into how ideas and projects can be turned into full blown business models.
My time at Unilever has allowed me to take my experiences in Enactus, the theory I learned throughout my undergraduate and master’s degrees and implement it, in real life projects. Thankfully, this internship led to a full-time role for me in Unilever Ireland, allowing me to make an even greater impact on the projects my team & I are working on.
Overall, working for Unilever has been and still is, such an amazing experience, and I would encourage anyone who wants to work for a socially conscious, global company, to apply for the internship. I never thought I’d be chosen, just give it your best shot!’
