Enactus Project Inspiration

 

Sanitree, Enactus Edinburgh

Sanitree’s founder Bharat set out to tackle period poverty in his hometown of Bhind. While at university, he formed Sanitree the social enterprise in September 2017 under the society Enactus Edinburgh. Empowering women is key to Sanitree’s mission within their production - this means creating a safe, fair, and enriching environment for the women who produce our pads. The women they employ are all from vulnerable backgrounds and are either single earners in their households, widowers or domestic abuse survivors. In order to allow them to complete daily household chores and childcare, the women are given the opportunity to work flexibly, fitting in work around their lives.

Sanitree’s mission is to work with it’s beneficiaries to create sustainable reusable period pads; protecting people and planet

    • Each year, 2 billion period products (around 200,000 tonnes) are flushed down toilets in the UK, accounting for 35-47% of all household products.

    • Disposable pads can contain up to 90% of plastic, equivalent to 4 plastic bags. These pads can take centuries to biodegrade, creating huge amounts of waste.

    • Micro plastics from disposable pads stay in the eco-system for hundreds of years.

    • Sanitree aims to tackle period poverty and stigma, particularly in Jaipur, India, in a sustainable, ethical and collaborative way.

    • Sanitree employs vulnerable women in Jaipur to produce reusable period pads which Santitree distributes to menstruators in need across the world. They make these from fabric offcuts to save them from going to landfill.

    • Their reusable and biodegradable pads are handmade by women in Jaipur using economically and environmentally sustainable fabric which is locally sourced from suppliers who share their ethos.

    • Using one of Sanitree’s full cycle kits for 2 years saves 572 disposable pads from landfill - the equivalent of 2,288 worth of plastic bags. Sanitree has also saved 260kg of textiles offcuts from landfill.

    • They also continue to provide significant and continued employment in Jaipur.
